Biting winds swept snow across the landscape, blanketing everything in a pristine white. On November 17, Chengkou County welcomed its first snowfall of the winter, sharply increasing the risk of ice buildup on power lines in high-altitude areas. State Grid Chongqing Chengkou Power Supply Company swiftly activated its emergency power supply plan for rainy and snowy weather, deploying multiple special patrol teams to the front lines. Adopting a "multi-dimensional inspection and service" approach, they fortified the power grid's safety defenses, ensuring stable electricity supply for both residential and industrial needs.
On November 17, employees Chen Lunwu and Zhang Lei from State Grid Chongqing Chengkou Power Supply Company measured simulated conductor ice thickness using vernier calipers at Tower 237 of the 220-kilovolt Huacheng Line.
"At Tower 237 of the 220kV Huacheng Line, conductors show no ice accumulation, temperatures are normal, and equipment is operating stably!" Tan Bowen from the transmission operation and maintenance team arrived at the Sanpai Mountain ice observation station, located nearly 2,000 meters above sea level. While monitoring the thickness of ice buildup on the conductors, he reported the situation, his breath forming a white mist that instantly dissipated in the frigid wind. The 220-kilovolt transmission line serves as the backbone of power supply for the Chengkou grid. Areas it traverses, such as Sanpai Mountain, experience ice accumulation for nearly three months during winter, making them the primary focus of this special inspection.
The transmission line operation and maintenance team employs a multi-dimensional inspection approach combining online monitoring with offline verification. While personnel at the monitoring center track critical data such as line icing and current levels in real time via a panoramic platform to pinpoint key monitoring sections, another group drives to heavily iced nodes and conducts foot patrols through ankle-deep snow. To guard against hidden dangers in snow-covered pits, team members formed a single file, taking turns to probe the path ahead. Snowflakes quickly accumulated on their helmets and work uniforms, yet they maintained meticulous inspections of every tower and joint, ensuring potential hazards were identified and addressed early.
In tandem with the special patrol in Gaoshan, staff from Miaoba Power Supply Station conducted inspections of 10-kilovolt power lines and visited local enterprises. At the Miaoba Industrial Park, power supply personnel entered multiple manufacturing facilities, delving into workshops to examine the operational status of critical equipment such as transformer loads and private power sources. They used infrared thermometers to "diagnose" line joints and inquired in detail about the companies' production plans and electricity needs. "This snow came so suddenly, and we were worried about production line disruptions when you arrived with your services—it couldn't have been more timely!" exclaimed the manager of one park enterprise, shaking hands with the staff. For two equipment hazards identified during the inspection, the staff provided immediate rectification recommendations and educated the enterprise on winter electrical safety and energy-saving practices.
It is reported that this special patrol deployed 32 personnel and 8 vehicles, completing inspections of 37 kilometers of 220-kilovolt lines and 52 kilometers of 10-kilovolt lines. The team identified and rectified 6 potential hazards and visited 7 enterprises within the industrial park. To prepare for potential prolonged cold and snowy weather, State Grid Chongqing Chengkou Power Supply Company has stockpiled emergency supplies including de-icing equipment and anti-skid chains. The company has also established an emergency response team comprising members of the Hongyan Volunteer Service Corps and implemented a 24-hour duty system.
Snow falls relentlessly, but patrols never cease. State Grid Chongqing Chengkou Power Supply Company will continue to intensify the frequency of line inspections and temperature monitoring, deepen its "proactive service" mechanism, and uphold the service tenet of "power for the people."
